Boho Headboard Ideas: Rattan, Wood, Textile and No-Headboard Looks

Compare eight ways to finish the wall behind a boho bed, from rattan, wood and linen headboards to painted arches, hung textiles and floor cushions, and see how each changes the pillows and wall decor.

A bed pushed against a bare wall tends to look unfinished, however good the bedding is. The pillows slide, the wall above feels empty, and nothing tells the eye where the bed ends and the room begins. A boho headboard solves that with a natural material and a soft shape instead of a bulky piece of furniture.

You may not need a headboard at all. Several of the most relaxed bed walls are built from paint, fabric or cushions. The table below compares the main options; the sections after it explain what each one suits and what it changes about the pillows and the wall above.

Eight options at a glance

Option Look Suits How it is fitted
Rattan or cane Light, airy, textured Small or dark rooms Bed-fixed or wall-fixed
Wood Warm, solid, grounding Pale, plain rooms Bed-fixed, freestanding or wall-fixed
Linen panel Soft, quiet, tailored Readers who sit up in bed Bed-fixed or wall-fixed
Slipcover Loose, casual An existing plain headboard Slips over, no fixings
Painted arch or block Graphic, flat Tight spaces Paint only
Textile on a rod Soft, patterned Plain bedding Wall-fixed rod
Floor cushions Low, lounge-like Low beds and platform beds Leaning, no fixings
Low shelf behind the bed Layered, collected Rooms with space behind the bed Freestanding

Rattan and cane

A woven rattan or cane headboard is the shape most people picture for this style: an arch, a fan or a simple rectangle of open webbing. Because you can see through or across it, it adds texture without visual bulk, which helps a compact room feel lighter.

The weave is already a pattern, so keep the pillows in front of it mostly plain, and leave the wall above empty or nearly so. An arched rattan headboard is tall; a second feature above it usually competes.

Wood, plain or carved-look

A wooden headboard brings weight and warmth. Plain planks or a slatted panel suit a modern boho room. A carved-look or fretwork panel is busier and works best as the single ornate piece in an otherwise calm space.

Wood behind the bed becomes the dominant wood tone in the room, so relate the bedside pieces to it instead of matching them exactly. This guide to mixing wood tones and finishes explains how. A wooden headboard takes patterned and textured pillows well, since its surface is quiet.

Fabric: a linen panel or a slipcover

An upholstered panel in linen or a linen-look weave is the most comfortable option to lean against. Choose a simple rectangle or a gentle curve in oatmeal, sand or clay, and let the natural creases of the fabric show.

If you already have a headboard you do not love, a loose slipcover changes it with no tools. A fitted cover in washed linen, or a quilt folded over the top and tucked behind the mattress, softens a hard or shiny surface in minutes and comes off for washing.

Four ways to get the effect with no headboard

A painted arch or block of color

A shape painted on the wall, slightly wider than the bed and rising to roughly 40 to 50 in (100 to 127 cm) above the mattress as a starting point, frames the bed with nothing sticking out from the wall. Terracotta, clay or sand on a warm white wall gives a soft result. In a rental, check your lease or ask before painting.

A large textile on a rod

A flat-woven blanket, a length of block-printed cotton or a light quilt hung from a slim rod behind the bed gives pattern and softness at once. Keep the textile light and wide, about the width of the bed. For sizing and height, the same rules apply as for styling a woven wall hanging above the bed.

A row of big floor cushions

Two or three large, firm floor cushions stood on the mattress or platform against the wall make a padded backrest. Use covers in one tone with different textures. This suits low beds especially, and it moves with you.

A low shelf behind the bed

A narrow freestanding console or shelf unit, a little taller than the mattress, gives the bed a back edge and a ledge for a leaning print or a trailing plant. Keep only light, stable objects on it, nothing that could tip toward the pillows, and follow the maker’s guidance on securing the unit.

What each choice changes above and in front

A headboard is part of a stack: pillows in front, wall decor above. Decide how the three share the attention.

  • Tall or patterned headboard (arched rattan, carved-look wood, a hung textile): plain pillows, bare wall above.
  • Low or plain headboard (slatted wood, linen panel, cushions): room for patterned pillows and one wall piece above, with a gap of roughly 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) between them.
  • Painted shape: treat the paint as the wall decor and add nothing else inside it, or one small light piece at most.

Pillow height matters too. Stand the back row so it covers no more than about half of the headboard; otherwise the shape you chose disappears. The order of the layers in front is covered in this guide to layering boho bedding.

Freestanding or fixed to the wall

Many headboards bolt to the bed frame or simply stand between the bed and the wall, held by the weight of the bed. These are the simplest choices and the easiest to take with you. Check that a freestanding one cannot rock or slide before you rely on it.

Before you hang anything

For a wall-fixed headboard or a textile rod, choose hardware to suit your wall type and the weight of the piece, and follow the manufacturer instructions. If the headboard is large or heavy, or you are unsure about the wall, get help or pick a freestanding or bed-fixed version. Nothing heavy belongs on the wall directly above the pillows.

Frequently asked questions

What can I use instead of a headboard?

A painted arch or block of color, a light textile on a slim rod, a row of large floor cushions against the wall, or a narrow freestanding shelf behind the bed all give the bed a visual back edge. Cushions and a freestanding shelf need no wall fixings, which makes them easy to move.

Is a rattan headboard comfortable to lean against?

Open cane and rattan weaves are firm and slightly springy, so most people add pillows when sitting up to read. Two large square pillows in front of the sleeping pillows usually give enough padding. If you sit up in bed often, an upholstered linen panel or firm floor cushions may suit you better.

How tall should a boho headboard be?

There is no fixed height. As a starting point, a headboard that shows roughly as much above the pillows as the pillows are tall looks balanced. Low, wide shapes feel calm and modern, while tall arches make the bed the clear focal point and leave little need for decor above.
